We are a big family, 7 to be exact, and when we travel it can be hard. Over the years we have found little ways to make big family travel easier and less stressful. The first issue is beds. Whether you are staying with friends or renting a place, finding enough beds is hard. Lucky for us our kids are young and don’t all need a full size bed so we have purchased these travel beds that have been well worth it to have on hand.
Joovy Foocot – This cot is a must have if you have young kids, it’s the perfect transition between crib and hotel bed high up on the floor. No need to worry about not having bed rails when you travel, just use this convenient cot that folds small for travel.
Kids air mattress – These kid sized air mattresses are perfect because they are low to the ground and can fit in a smaller space when traveling. We purchased this air bed pump to make them inflate quick and easy. These easily fit school age and even a middle school kid who isn’t too big.
Next is packing, for 7 people if you go for a week that means a lot of stuff to pack and haul!
Hard Car Top Carrier – When we travel we need a lot of stuff and that means we need someplace to put it! We bought a hard car top carrier years ago and it has gotten so much use! I like the hard ones better as they hold more, are more protective and I feel like they are better against the elements. Just don’t forget it is on top of the car and drive into anything! We almost pulled into the garage after our first trip using it!
Packing Cubes – Organization is key and combining bags a must. If we have a huge pile of bags it is harder to manage than having a bunch of smaller individual bags. These packing cubes make it easy to keep everyone’s stuff straight, one color per person!
Places to stay can prove tricky with a big family. Most hotels you can get adjoining rooms, but with my kids ages I am not comfortable with that option so we look for places with suites. We have found water parks to be extremely friendly to big families Castaway Bay, Great Wolf Lodge, and Kalahari all have great options. Cedar Point is another great place we love, the Breakers Hotel at Cedar Point is our yearly destination it works so well for us! Renting a home can be a great option too especially if you do it with another family, pack the kids in on those air mattresses!
Food: It can be pricey to feed all these people out at restaurants so we try to find places that offer meal packages, kids deals and kids eat free. Another way to save is finding a room with a kitchen so you can make your own meals!
Do you have a big family? How do you make travel happen with less stress even though your numbers are above average?
