I will never understand the mindset of the mom who lets her child go swimming who can not swim. There seems to be this unspoken rule that moms have bought into that if your child can stand and have their head above water then they don’t need to know how to swim. It’s not true at all, so unsafe! Or the myth that knowing how to doggy paddle is enough, you don’t need to know real strokes. Lies, all of it. And buying into these myths are dangerous.
Last year seemed like the year of drownings. On the news, in my Facebook feed, stories from friends, everywhere I turned another story of a child drowning. And I refuse to be that mom who thinks it could never happen to me. It could happen and it would be awful, unimaginably awful. So I am doing everything in my power to prevent my kids from being drowning victims.
Goldfish Swim School is a huge part of my plan. Of all the places my kids have taken lessons Goldfish has prepared them better as far as water safety. Do I want my kids to know how to swim freestyle and breathe to the side? YES! Do I want my kid to be able to tread water for 45 seconds, even better! None of my kids ever learned to tread water in a swim lesson until we started at Goldfish Swim School. This is a huge safety skill! Just last week I was discussing swim team with my 6 year old, she is very nervous about how long the outdoor pool is. When I asked her what was the worst thing that could happen she said, what if I can’t make it all the way across? I told her if that happens you stop and tread water and yell for help. She proudly proclaimed that she made it to 90 seconds treading water the last time she was timed at her Goldfish Swim School lesson. I assured her 90 seconds was more than enough time for a life guard to get to her. Goldfish is giving my daughter confidence in her skills and I am so grateful.
I always love watching the youngest kids choo-choo train along the wall and learn to climb out without a ladder. And when they have the kids jump in without goggles and swim back to the wall… brilliant! These are real life skills that are needed in bad situations. I am so grateful that Goldfish Swim School is not just concerned about teaching my kid to swim but about their safety.
Once my kids are proficient swimmers I have them join our summer swim team. Swimming for an hour 5 days a week builds endurance and skill. If my kids get in a bad situation I want to know I have given them every possible skill to make it out of that situation safely.
When I head to the pool in the summer as a mom out numbered by her 5 kids I know I need to be more vigilant. We have a rule, if you have not passed the swim test then you must wear a life jacket when in the pool. Thank goodness for Puddle Jumpers and thank goodness for Goldfish Swim School helping me on my way to 5 strong and safe swimmers! And saving my sanity!
Thanks to Goldfish Swim School for partnering in providing lessons for my kids.
