It’s January and that means that the winter crazies are setting in. If you have a kid under 5 at your house you know the desperation of a kid trapped in the house too long. Over the years I have come to anticipate these months of indoor time and planned accordingly. Even though the cold temperatures make me want to stay inside I know both my kids and I need to get out and burn off some energy. So here are my favorite ways to burn off some energy with a preschooler during winter.
Indoor playgrounds. The key to indoor playgrounds is to hit them at non-peak hours so you don’t have to deal with large crowds and lots of germs. My favorite place is Chick-fil-a on Sawmill, they serve breakfast, have free wi-fi and there is never anyone there during the morning! And they have hand sanitizer wipes available!
Swim Lessons. Summer is going to come very fast and you do not want to wake up and realize you are headed to the pool and your kids can’t swim. I have been there and it is not a good place to be. The pool can be so stressful and you add in a non-swimmer and it is a stress tsunami. I let my oldest 2 kids reach the age of 6 before they were safe in a pool, I have not repeated that mistake. Thanks to Goldfish Swim School my 4-year-old is a better swimmer than my older 2 were at 6. Every week she looks forward to her lessons, they are fun, educational and they burn off some of that winter energy. I cannot rave enough about Goldfish Swim School, in Columbus we have 2 locations (Dublin and Westerville) soon to be a third in Lewis Center.
Open Gym. Many of our local rec centers have preschool and toddler open gym. It can be a bit chaotic but it means they get to burn off energy in a safe way with other kids their age. Even if it is not your community center most allow anyone to join, you just might pay slightly more as a non-resident.
Dance Class. Boy or girl you can find a fun dance class to take. My daughter does ballet but our studio has hip-hop as well. Burn some energy off, have some fun and learn some dance moves!
Action Games. If you have a gaming system there are so many action games. We love the dancing games and the sport games. They are so much fun to play and they really get you moving. Here are a few we love:
- Kinect Adventures for XBOX 360
- Kinect Sports
- Nickelodeon Dance 2 for Wii
- Just Dance Disney Party for Wii
How do you keep your kids active during those cold winter months?
Thanks to Goldfish Swim School for partnering in providing lessons for my kids.
