About 3 months ago I decided that I was going to start using natural deodorant. I have toyed with the idea many times in the past but never took the plunge. Truth be told I was scared, scared I would stink and be embarrassed. I trusted my current antiperspirant deodorant and never thought twice about if I smelled. So, what changed? My kids. My older two girls are both using deodorant and I started to remember all the reasons I considered switching to a natural deodorant. The main reason is aluminum and parabens and trying to make the best decisions for my girls. I started my journey into natural deodorant by asking Facebook of course. I asked what brand people used and then tried several brands, I almost gave up on the idea. I go to Pure Barre 3-4 times a week and after one class I almost apologized to those around me, I did not smell great. After that class, I began asking more questions of long time natural deodorant users. I will say the story ends well and I am happily using natural deodorant with no plans of stopping. So here is what I learned on my journey to natural deodorant.
- Your armpit ducts are clogged so it will take time to adjust to this new deodorant. I read that people recommend doing a charcoal detox. I didn’t have the ingredients but instead used a charcoal face mask (yes, I really did) every few days and I did notice a difference. After a couple weeks you can stop this.
- You will smell at first, you just will. To help with this wipe your armpits with witch hazel after you shower and before you put on deodorant. I did this the first 3 weeks as I detoxed my armpits and then stopped.
- You will sweat and it will be weird. After not sweating under my arms for pretty much my whole adult life it was odd to sweat. Once your pores are unclogged and you have been using natural deodorant for a while you will see a decrease in the amount of sweat but with some brands you will always sweat. The brand I am using now is the most effective in stopping sweat and it does a great job deodorizing. Native deodorant is the only company with an unscented natural deodorant that has really worked for me although I do like the apricot and white peach scent.
Native deodorant uses baking soda to neutralize odors, arrowroot powder to absorb moisture and acidophilus to eliminate odor-causing fungi, yeast, and bacteria. They also have scents but for me unscented is preferred. I never used scented deodorant before so one of the hard parts of switching to natural deodorant was having a scented deodorant.
I cannot recommend switching to natural deodorant enough, if you are considering the switch get some witch hazel pads, charcoal face mask and Native deodorant and you will be just fine!
