This is the last week of July and that means that summer is rapidly coming to a close. I try not to think about back to school until August hits, but that doesn’t mean that my kids aren’t keeping up with school work. Summer slide is a parents worst nightmare. All year long my husband and I help with homework and go the extra mile to keep them on track and to loose that over the summer is the worst. Plus if they slide backwards that means more work for us this fall and I would rather work to move forward than cover the same stuff we worked on last year all over again.
So I came up with a plan, yet again, to try and keep my kids on track this summer. I feel like it is working pretty well, I guess back to school will be the moment of truth! The good news is you can still help get your kids on track even if you did nothing all summer. The things I did are easy to do and you can pick them up quickly and quite painlessly.
READING: This one is pretty simple, help your kids find books and then enforce reading time. If, like me, you could use 30 minuets of quiet then enforcing reading time is just what you need. When it comes to finding the right books I love checking local libraries for grade based book suggestions.
WRITING: Practicing handwriting is important, kids need to write and write often. Journaling is a great way to encourage your kids to be creative, document their summer and practice writing. I found these two fabulous Doodle Journals (this Doodle Journal too) on Amazon and my girls love them. They write each day and then spend some time doodling, they love it and it benefits them for school.
MATH: For math we have been using a great online program called IXL this program is one you buy but very reasonable. You can choose just math or add other subjects like social studies, language arts and science. I like this program above others because it walks kids through the process of how to come to the right answer so even if they don’t know the answer they will after they are done using IXL.
We try for 5 days a week of each of the above things, not every day it works but more often than not it does. So how ar eyou going in your battle against summer slide? I feel like I am winning… at least for now! Taking it one day at a time.
