Summertime is the perfect time to slow down and relax the rules a bit. Everyone is tired of homework, even mom, so it can be really easy to let your kids fall into a summer slump. When kids are in the first few years of reading it is so important to make sure they make the time to read daily. Thankfully my kids are not adverse to reading, although they would prefer technology and playing to sitting still to read.
I want my kids to love reading like I do so I knew I needed to be creative and add a bit of fun to this daily activity. Our backyard is beautiful, it is full of tall mature trees that provide great shade and privacy. I encouraged my kids to enjoy our yard and make reading a fun outdoor adventure. They pick a spot they love, grab a picnic blanket and spend some time enjoying a good book. I love looking out in my yard and seeing my kids enjoying the beauty of nature while reading a great book.
Now that we have the perfect location to read we need books that inspire a love of reading. Sometimes it can be hard for a child to determine what type of book they love and if your kid doesn’t like the book they are reading they won’t want to read. One of my daughters struggled with this so we did a lot of trying books. If you need a list to start from I recommend checking out the Scholastic Store book list broken down by grade. I recommend grabbing a stack from the library and let your kid try different genres. Be sure they give the book a fair shot, maybe set a minimum of days they need to read it. At our house we read for 30 minutes each day and I would make the child read for 2-3 days unless they really hated it.
After my kids abandon their spot I grab my own book and a drink and read my book while they play in the yard. Can you imagine a better place to spend an afternoon?
