I am the middle child of 3, I have a younger sister and a big brother. Growing up I grew tall very young and people often asked if my brother and I were twins. It made sense since I worshiped him and could always be found by his side all through our elementary school days. I sat at the all boys lunch table with him and his friends and I even collected baseball cards just to be like him. I was a real tomboy who worshiped her big brother, and he was awesome about it. I have no memories of feeling like I was that annoying little sister and because of that we were still close in high school.
My big brother is a pretty incredible guy, he is one of those people that everyone likes and I mean everyone. He gets along with anyone and everyone and people enjoy his company. When he announced that he wanted to be a firefighter it made perfect sense. This guy who loves people and has a generous heart would make the perfect firefighter. Rescuing others just made sense for him.
Before my brother became a firefighter and a paramedic I never really thought about the tole it takes on your family life. Now that he is married and just welcomed his 3rd child it is painfully evident how much he gives up to serve others. There is no guarantee of holidays off and trying to schedule vacation is more complicated than you would think. While my husband gets holidays and weekends off my brother is gone days at a time and misses many holidays.
I am so grateful for people like my brother who are choosing to serve and for their families who support them and live life around the crazy schedule they keep. My brother and all the other firefighters I have met through him are why I am so in love with the Thanksgiving Hero campaign from La Brea Bakery!
