My friends and I have often had the conversation about lost skills. There are so many things we go to others to get help with that we our self can not do, sewing is a big one. The irony of us having our mothers or grandmothers help us and not doing it our self is that we will not have that skill to pass on to our daughters. I have vowed to slowly but surely become a domestic goddess and learn all of those skills so that I might excell in all areas of running a home and my life. I was recently sent the book How to Sew a Button: And Other Nifty Things Your Grandmother Knew
by Erin Bried and it is fantastic. Erin interviewed 10 different grandmothers who survived the Great Depression to ask them about life skills that they found invaluable and she came up with a fabulous list. The book covers all sorts of topics in easy to follow steps and is filled with life skills that we all should have but many of us don’t. The book is broken down into 10 sections: Cooking, Gardening, Cleaning, Dressing, Nesting, Thriving, Loving, Saving, Joining, and Entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and while I knew a lot of the things in it I also learned some too. Erin even made a video tutorial on how to make a baby toy, check it out HERE. I know lots of women who would really benefit from this book and I plan to add it to my gift list as a great staple item for all women plus it is only $15 which is a great price. I am thrilled to say I have a copy of How To Sew A Button to giveaway to one lucky Thrifty & Chic Mom reader. To enter tell me what skill your grandmother has that you wish you had.
