Gabriela American Girl Doll of the Year

Meet Gabriela McBride the 2017 American Girl Doll of the Year!

Gabriela is a true talent who uses her passion for the arts—specifically spoken word poetry—to overcome personal obstacles and create positive change for her community. Gabriela launches with a beautiful 18-inch doll, plus several performance-inspired outfits, accessories, and toys. We’re also happy to share that, unlike past Girl of the Year characters, Gabriela will be available throughout 2017 and beyond.

As you just read Gabriela is unique for many reasons including the fact that she will not disappear at the end of 2017 like past American Girl, Girl of the Year Dolls. Gabriela is also unique in that her release has launched a partnership with Scholastic to create and distribute Express Yourself, a program for classrooms that empowers students to use the arts as a tool for self-expression. Available in March 2017, the classroom resources give teachers the tools to encourage students to find their creative voices and bring awareness to spoken word poetry, just in time for National Poetry Month in April.

american girl doll Gabriela

Like all American Girl dolls Gabriela has a story and a message. I love that this doll focuses on the importance of the arts. In a time when more and more schools are cutting funding for art and music programs this is a great message to share. Each 18″ doll comes with the book Gabriela, here’s a brief peak…

Gabriela has grown up surrounded by the arts—dance, painting, music, and theater. But poetry is becoming her art form of choice, for good reason: she struggles with stuttering and poetry helps her words flow more freely. Although Gabriela is a bit quiet, when she does speak, she is sharp, honest, and funny. But can she learn to harness the power of her words and her creativity to help save her beloved community arts center from being torn down?

You can find Gabriela at your closest American Girl store or online.
